Singapore has 3 ethnic influenced neighborhoods and the Kampong Glam is the Malaysian Muslim district. The others are Little India and Chinatown. The Kampong Glam is original neighborhood provided to the Sultan and Temenggong when the British colonized. Today is an enclave of smaller, traditional merchant homes surrounded by high rises. While I felt this neighborhood offered the least to see in terms of attractions (essentially the Sultan Mosque is it), it does offer great shopping on Arab Street and Haji Lane. It is one of the 3 neighborhoods you have to see, but really just plan to shop.

This district is what used to be known as the Muslim Quarters and many of the sights, landmarks and streets give testimony of its former name. Some of the best landmarks and sights in this area include The Gem Museum, Masjid Sultan, Arab Street and the psychedelic Haji Street. It’s worth coming here to see the many attractions.

Singapore is a very modern, immaculately clean and green city. But if you want to escape the high-rise glitz, go to Kampong Glam. Glam definitely doesn't mean glamorous!! That said, it is an authentic neighbourhood with original style houses and shops and a "real" feel to it. My wife was particularly impressed with the number of fabric shops offering a massive range of fabrics of every quality from around the world. The silks were really beautiful. There's also a big range of Middle Eastern restaurants to choose from.
