Private Day Trip Wicklow Mountains, Glendalough & Kilkenny Castle

1 review
The Wicklow Mountains are a popular Dublin day trip, although it can be time-consuming to reach them independently. Make the most of your limited stay in the region by opting for this full-day private excursion which includes transportation and helps you cover more ground than you could independently, without having to waste time waiting around for other travelers.

Just loved spending time exploring the amazing gardens. The Japanese Garden is just gorgeous. It would’ve been lovely to see the house preserved as a home and not just shops.

As usual we had a great visit to Powerscourt, the gardens were spectacular and everything seemed well-organised with regards to Covid regs. However the cafe had a few issues. The table service only is now the norm, however, there was quite a wait for a table but once seated our order was taken and delivered quickly. We ordered sandwiches which came in a little “packet” with a little pot of relish and garnished with salad leaves. The bread was not terribly fresh but the fillings were both plentiful and of good quality. It’s a bit if a mystery why they bothered with the leaves and relish as we had no way to eat them, no knives or forks even of a disposable variety. Nor were there any napkins provided, in other places we have eaten the cutlery has come in an envelope including a napkin and on occasion, condiments. To pay, you go to a till and give them your table number and they are supposed to have your order pinned against the relevant number, somehow there were two orders on our number but there was no issue when we said only one was our order. I think next time we visit we’ll wait until we get to the lovely village of Enniscorthy to eat.

Our 3 and 7 year old loved exploring the gardens. We did one half before lunch (at Avoca!) and the other half afterwards. We would still be there if it hadn’t started raining. They didn’t want to leave!! The path takes you by and old “castle tower” folly surrounding by genuine old cannons - which our boys fired off every single one to defend the castle. In olden times, you could climb to the top, but with covid, no climbing allowed. Japanese gardens with winding paths and wee bridges are a delight for young kids. Manicured formal gardens good for slow walks past the fruit trees into mature woodland for minibeasts and insects. Bamboo forests with pretend ninjas all around.
